Gillie Hoyte Byrom who has over 35 years experience, has written her treatise “The Practice of Painting in Enamel.” She fully describes all the methods she was taught when she trained in Barcelona in 1990, besides giving comprehensive instruction in enamel painting techniques she has developed in creating miniatures to commission. The British Society of Enamellers is pleased to be one of the sponsors of the annual bursary awarded by our sister organization, the Guild of Enamellers. The bursary encourages new enamellers who show talent and innovation in their work and a commitment to including enamelling in their professional practice. This year’s bursary attracted a large number of applicants, all of whom will benefit from a year’s membership of both organizations.
There was a very high standard of work, many candidates having developed their own methods and techniques, and it was heartening to find that many colleges are now introducing enamelling to their students with particularly strong entries from some of the Scottish colleges. After much discussion, the bursary was awarded to Josephine Conkie, for her ability to use traditional enamelling techniques in an experimental, creative and contemporary way. Four runners-up were also selected: Galit Barak, Kathryn Partington, Katie Petrie and Maria Torres who all showed innovation and determination to continue to develop the use of enamel in their work.
