The Handmade Fairs are delighted to be collaborating with Arts Thread for the fourth year running, to curate an “Emerging Talents” stand at the events and welcome applications from emerging makers.

The opportunity is open to graduates worldwide from 2015/16/17 and designer-makers who have set up their business within the last 12 months.

The Guild of Enamellers 2018 Bursary Award

Applications are invited for The Guild of Enamellers 2018 Bursary Award.  This prestigious award, which is now attracting record numbers of applicants, has a prize fund worth more than £1000 and is a wonderful opportunity for new enamellers to showcase their enamelling skills.

Deadline for applications is 31st July 2017.  All applications are made digitally through the Guild of Enamellers’ website, where full details, and terms and conditions are available.

Due to the generosity of our sponsors, the Award winner will have a free place at the Guild of Enamellers Conference in April 2018 (sponsored by WG Ball Ltd.) with the opportunity to exhibit their work and enter for a range of awards. The prize fund also includes free editorial and promotion in craft&design online and the Guild’s journal and website; tools & equipment from Vitrum Signum and Proops Bros. Ltd; membership of both the Guild and the British Society of Enamellers; sample enamel sets courtesy of Milton Bridge Ceramic Colours Ltd; access to the extensive Guild library and a set of Guild teaching DVDs.  The award is worth in excess of £1,000.

3d Enamelling On Copper Foil With Maureen Carswell

Maureen Carswell is a member of the British Society of Enamellers. She specialises in working on thin copper foil that enables delicate individual forms to be made from the simplest bowl shape through pleated, folded pieces, right through to ‘fantasy’ pieces. We will use liquid enamel and liquid flux, which can be used as an agent to hold sifted enamel. Sgraffito in liquid enamels can also be used in the decorative process and this will be included. There will be an opportunity to try other forms of decoration, such as decals, gold and silver foils etc and experiment with torch firing can be included. Bring any drawings, ideas and photographs you may have.

a major exhibition of contemporary techniques in glass on metal from the British Society of Enamellers.

Opens 10th October at the Goldsmiths’ Centre, London.

Education programme events: Wednesdays 19th & 26th October, 2nd November.

From fine enamel on precious metals in traditional techniques such as basse-taille, champlevé and cloisonné, to experimental wet-process on copper and steel, via high-firing, sgraffito, stencilling and decals, this exhibition will show the wide range of styles in current practice from over 50 artists. Industrial large panels, car badges, regalia and medals from commercial companies contrast with sculptures, exquisite miniature paintings, jewellery and wall panels.

We have a fantastic programme with plenty of opportunities to explore, create and buy over the three days. Within the festival grounds there are Makers’ Marquees hosting over 100 top UK contemporary craftspeople showing and selling their work. We also have 20+ heritage craftspeople demonstrating their skills, many giving you the opportunity to have a go and create something for yourself. (taken from the festival website)
