Virtual Workshops with The Enamelist Society

Cloisonné Enamel with Linda Connelly

This is a virtual workshop. In this 2-session workshop we will explore the cloisonné technique. This is where colored enamels are fused into a network of raised cells on a gold, silver, or copper base. We will focus on working on silver using transparent enamels, but it is possible to apply the same techniques to working on copper with just a few adaptations. These can be discussed if required. This is a beautifully versatile technique that can work well on a large scale on copper, down to extremely intricate work on precious metals.

The class is suitable for enthusiastic enamelists of all levels although some experience of wet packing and of working on silver is required. We will be kiln-firing our pieces for the class.

Students will receive a PDF handout and access to an online forum on her website. The materials list will be emailed at a later date.

Sarah Wilmott

Winner of the Guild of Enamellers annual bursary sponsored by the British Society of enamellers.

The Guild of Enamellers' is delighted to announce Sarah Wilmott as the 2023 Winner of their Annual Bursary Award.

Sarah is currently studying Silversmithing and Jewellery at Glasgow School of Arts, where she has been introduced to enamelling by her tutors. Sarah has also attended a workshop with Elizabeth Jane Campbell (a previous Bursary winner), during which she was introduced to various enamelling techniques, which she felt could help to enhance her contemporary jewellery practice. Sarah believes meticulous attention to detail is paramount to her work and is committed to further developing her skills and knowledge.

Sarah wishes to develop her enamelling skills, specifically by exploring texture through under firing. With the support of the Bursary Award and with the support of our sponsors she will be able to produce work at a scale otherwise unachievable to her.

The Guild is extremely grateful to our joint sponsors, The British Society of Enamelling, Milton Bridge, Vitrum Sigmun, Proops Brothers Ltd, Corby Kilns, and Harrison & Harrison. Thanks also to their generosity Julia Dunstan and Sophie Aboulossoud were awarded runner up prizes.

The selection panel was impressed by the quality and diversity of the applications and were delighted to see both excellence in traditional techniques and candidates who were taking the art of enamelling in new directions.
